Training Advice from Jill

Hello everyone, when it comes to training your puppy it can be overwhelming and frustrating. But be patient, obedience training is critical when it comes to nurturing a canine/human relationship and creating a socially compatible pet.  When training is positive and fun, both you and your dog can enjoy the process as well as the results. If you’re inexperienced in dog training, consider enrolling your dog in a formal class. I would suggest “puppy kindergarten” right away. AKC has a great puppy class called the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility. This a great incentive program and is also a pre-requisite to the Canine Good Citizen test. You can find your nearest evaluator here http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/cgc_bystate.cfm But you don’t have to stop at obedience. There are several activities you can do with your dog including Rally, Agility, Therapy, Tracking, or Search and Rescue!

Crate Training: Susan Garrett has a wonderful DVD you can order that covers crate training. She refers to it as crate games. I trained my dog using her methods and it has taught him to love his crate. It has helped for traveling, obedience and agility trials, and just having peace of mind knowing that when I take a day trip he is comfortable and relaxed in his “home.” You can order the DVD here http://www.clickerdogs.com/crate_games.php
